It is with great sadness to inform you that Kevin Lo has passed away. Kevin suffered a stroke on Wednesday, November 24th in Philadelphia and was taken to Jefferson Hospital where he passed away on Sunday, November 28th.

Sigma Chapter #1 Again!

The 39th Gamma Iota Sigma Annual International Management Conference was held at Central Michigan University from September 30 to October 2, 2010. The conference was attended by
33 officers and members as well as our faculty Advisors Dr. R. B. Drennan and Professor McCloskey and our Director Michelle M. Henry. Chapters from all over the United States and Canada came together to participate in educational workshops, a career fair and various social events. The highlight of the conference was the International Awards Dinner where the Edison L. Bowers Award was announced.

Charity of Choice: Aid for Friends

Charity of Choice: Aid for Friends

The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma is proud to announce our Charity of Choice this year is Aid for Friends. Their mission is to serve the needy, isolated shut-ins, primarily the frail elderly, in the 5 county Great Philadelphia area, with free daily home-cooked meals delivered weekly by empathetic volunteer visitors, and also to provide shut-ins with free outreach services. The goal is to help homebound “client/friends” maintain their cherished independence by supporting their determination to remain in their own homes for as long as possible and to enhance their quality of life. As always, The Sigma Chapter has pledged to contribute $5,000.

On September 21, 2010, Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma and The Department of Risk, Insurance and Health Care Management held the 22nd Annual Awards for Excellence Luncheon. The event was held in Mitten Hall at Temple University. In attendance were current students, faculty, alumni and sponsors.

10th Annual Sigma Chapter Golf Outing

The purpose and mission of the Sigma Chapter is to enhance the professionalism of students, and a good part of that development comes from networking with industry professionals. In an effort to maintain a relationship with the risk management and insurance industry as well as with the alumni of the Temple University, the Sigma chapter hosts many events each semester with the specific goal of exposing our students to the professional world.

The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma's students have received several awards and scholarships including the Elmer Roe Deaver Foundation scholarship, Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters scholarship, Towers Watson scholarship, Travelers Foundation scholarship, and the Independent Insurance Agents of Philadelphia & Suburbs scholarship.

Professional Exam Completion

For students in the Risk Management and Actuarial Science fields, passing exams given by professional societies is of critical importance to their professional development. The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma encourages our members to take these professional exams while still in college. These rigorous exams are given by various educational organizations in the Risk Management and Actuarial Science fields, and the Sigma Chapter is proud of our members who have completed this difficult task. These include exams for the CEBS, CPCU and ARM designations, as well as actuarial exams sponsored by the Society of Actuaries.

Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series

On September 15, 2010, the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma began its Fall 2010 H. Wayne Snider Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series with Ken Rado, Director of Risk Management & Planning from the Insurance Services Office. This is the signature semester event of the Sigma Chapter, as key people within the Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance industry from all over the United States come to Temple University to personally speak to our members. All weekly speaker presentations were held in the Alter Hall Auditorium on Wednesdays during the business free period from 12:00pm to 12:50pm. Following each of the speaker presentations, faculty advisor Dr. R.B. Drennan and a number of Sigma Chapter members accompanied the speaker to lunch in the Diamond Club of Mitten Hall.

Summer 2010 Internships

The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma is strongly devoted towards developing its members from a professional standpoint. One of the best ways to cultivate a career in either Actuarial Science or Risk Management and Insurance while still in college is to complete a summer internship. Gamma Iota Sigma would like to congratulate those students that made it through the rigorous interview process and proceeded through the summer of 2010 with an internship experience. Below is a list of students, the company they interned with and the city in which they interned. Dr. R. B. Drennan, Associate Professor, Chairman and Faculty Advisor of Gamma Iota Sigma and Michael McCloskey, Assistant Faculty Advisor of Gamma Iota Sigma direct the internship program in the Department of Risk, Insurance, and Health Care Management.

CEBS Designation

The Sigma Chapter would like to congratulate Scott Riegel (class of 2010) and Cliff Kao (Class of 2010) on their recent accomplishments. Both of these students have passed all the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) exams and have now received their CEBS Designation. This designation is rarely received by a student and is considered a huge accomplishment. These students are active members of Gamma Iota Sigma and have participated in many of our events.

Graduating Senior Career Reception

Graduating Senior Career Reception

On Thursday, October 14th, 2010, the Sigma Chapter held our annual Graduating Senior Career Reception. The Principal Underwriter was Travelers. In attendance were recruiters from 32 companies, alumni and over 120 graduating seniors. The reception is one of the last Gamma-assisted steps in a student’s life before entering the professional world. For many seniors, this reception was the culmination of months of preparation and professional development. In order to attend the reception, students had to complete several professional development workshops, a mock interview and a resume review. The Sigma Chapter would like to thank all those who made this event a great success.

Actuarial Science Internship Career Reception

Actuarial Science Internship Career Reception

On Monday, November 15, 2010, the Sigma Chapter held the annual Actuarial Science Internship Career Reception. This reception was a culmination of months of hard work and preparation. In order to attend the reception, actuarial science students must complete the entire “Road to the Resume Book” process, which includes an interview workshop, mock etiquette workshop, mock interview and resume review. After taking part in all of these steps, the actuarial science students were ready to begin talking to the 17 companies that attended the reception about summer 2011 internship opportunities. This event was held in the MBA Commons on the seventh floor of Alter Hall. 78 students attended along with 17 companies.

Happy 30th Birthday Sigma Chapter!

Happy 30th Birthday Sigma Chapter!

Sunday, November 21, 2010 marked the 30th Anniversary of the chartering of the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma at Temple University. A celebration was held on Friday, November 19, 2010, where there was be free birthday cake on the first floor of Alter Hall from 9am- 3:00 p.m. Students, faculty and administration of the Fox School of Business were welcomed to stop by and help us celebrate this milestone. Without the support of our faculty advisor, Dr. R.B. Drennan and Associate Director Michelle Henry, the Sigma Chapter would not have been able to achieve the success that it has.

Case Competition


Risk management professionals, some as far away as Houston, Texas, gathered in Alter Hall on Saturday, November 6, 2010, to be judges in a risk analysis case competition for graduating seniors taking the RMI capstone course. Two corporate risk managers, two representatives of the largest global insurance brokerage firms, two insurance company underwriters and two risk and insurance educators from the Insurance Society of Philadelphia and the American Institute for CPCU, read the risk analysis reports on fourteen mid-cap companies, listened to teams of seniors highlight their findings and then asked questions as if they were from the client company.
